Abstract

Tersedak (choking) pada anak merupakan kondisi kegawatdaruratan yang memerlukan penanganan segera karena dapat menyebabkan gangguan jalan napas hingga kematian apabila tidak ditangani dengan tepat. Berdasarkan hasil wawancara awal, diketahui bahwa pengetahuan ibu balita mengenai penanganan choking masih rendah. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan ibu balita dalam penanganan choking setelah diberikan edukasi dan demonstrasi. Metode yang digunakan adalah edukasi melalui penyuluhan dan demonstrasi praktik penanganan choking. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di Posyandu ILP Seroja, Puskesmas Sukorame, Kota Kediri, dengan melibatkan seluruh ibu balita sebagai peserta. Jumlah sampel sebanyak 18 orang yang dipilih menggunakan teknik total sampling. Pengetahuan diukur menggunakan kuesioner pre-test dan post-test, sedangkan keterampilan dinilai melalui lembar observasi praktik. Analisis data dilakukan menggunakan uji Wilcoxon. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa sebelum intervensi sebagian besar peserta memiliki tingkat pengetahuan kurang (61,1%) dan keterampilan kurang (72,2%). Setelah diberikan edukasi dan demonstrasi, sebagian besar peserta memiliki tingkat pengetahuan baik (77,8%) dan keterampilan baik (83,3%). Hasil uji Wilcoxon menunjukkan nilai p = 0,000 (p < 0,05), yang menunjukkan bahwa edukasi dan demonstrasi berpengaruh signifikan terhadap peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan ibu balita dalam penanganan choking. Kegiatan edukasi dan demonstrasi terbukti efektif dalam meningkatkan kesiapsiagaan ibu balita dalam memberikan pertolongan pertama pada kasus tersedak. Program edukasi serupa diharapkan dapat dilaksanakan secara berkelanjutan sebagai upaya meningkatkan kemampuan masyarakat dalam menangani keadaan kegawatdaruratan pada anak serta mencegah kematian akibat keterlambatan penanganan tersedak.

Abstract

Choking in children is a medical emergency that requires immediate management because it can cause airway obstruction and lead to death if not treated promptly and appropriately. Based on the preliminary interviews, the knowledge of mothers with toddlers regarding choking management was still inadequate. This community service program aimed to analyze the improvement in mothers' knowledge and skills regarding choking management following an educational intervention and practical demonstration.

The intervention consisted of health education through lectures and demonstrations of choking first-aid techniques. The program was conducted at ILP Seroja Integrated Health Post (Posyandu), Sukorame Public Health Center, Kediri City, involving all mothers of toddlers as participants. A total of 18 participants were recruited using a total sampling technique. Knowledge was assessed using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, while skills were evaluated through an observational checklist during practical sessions. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test.

The results showed that before the intervention, most participants had poor knowledge (61.1%) and poor skills (72.2%) in managing choking. Following the educational intervention and practical demonstration, the majority of participants demonstrated good knowledge (77.8%) and good skills (83.3%). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a statistically significant improvement in both knowledge and skills (p = 0.000; p < 0.05), indicating that the educational intervention and demonstration effectively enhanced mothers' competence in choking management.

Educational sessions combined with practical demonstrations were effective in improving mothers' preparedness to provide first aid for choking incidents in children. Similar community-based educational programs are recommended to be implemented continuously to strengthen community capacity in managing pediatric emergencies and to prevent child mortality resulting from delayed choking management.
